Eastern Frisia is a historic region with a strong
sense of their own home and identity.
When we are talking about the language of the
East Frisians, we mean the various widespread dialects which are settled around all geographical regions in Eastern Frisia.
Nowadays we can linguistically distinguish roughly two regions in Eastern Frisia:
The Northeast - the so-called ''Harlingerland'' -
and the Southwest. In former times they were separated by fenlands. Additionally there are a
range of regions where the pronunciation as well
as the grammar and vocabulary differentiate.
Especially the western dialects in Eastern Frisia, which are being influenced by the Dutch, differ a
lot from those that are spoken in other regions of Northern Germany.
Hello and welcome at the Low German Office!
We are making an effort in reassuring that Eastern Frisia
stays multilingual.
